About Us

The House of Dessye carries a rich legacy dating back to the 900s, rooted in both tradition and the power of cultural convergence. In 1882, Emperor Yohannes IV, captivated by a brilliant comet in the highlands of Wollo, named the town "Dessye," meaning "My Joy" in Amharic. This joy is the very essence we strive to evoke in every piece we create.

Our family's journey began with fine jewellery, officially established in 1017. For centuries, our ancestors crafted exquisite pieces, including Meskel crosses and crown jewels. However, historical events like the Battle of Adwa and World War II disrupted our operations, which ceased in 1935. The House of Dessye was re-established in 2017 by Tesfaye Dessye, our Chief Executive Officer.

As the creative director, Daniel Dessye bridges the old with the new, merging his modern upbringing in hip-hop culture with the rich traditions of Ethiopian artistry. Having crafted gold grillz since the age of 15, Daniel combines contemporary design with traditional styles. Being a product of opposing tribes and a Caribbean mother, his work symbolizes unity, highlighting the similarities between different cultures through innovative designs.

Today, The House of Dessye operates as a design and production firm, committed to modernizing traditional African luxury and art. Our creations are a manifestation of resilience through love, regardless of differences. We aspire to spread this love and hope our family story empower others to continue the legacy of joy and excellence that has defined us for generations.
